RICHARD HENRY DANA CHARITY REGATTA

Dana Point Yacht Club is proud to present the 16th Annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, a four day event held September 4, 5, 6, 7. This annual event includes many facets of fun on the water!

We have two days of sailboat racing for PHRF classes, Non-Spinnaker classes, and the Audi-Cup One Design Classes. We also sponsor races for Juniors, racing in Naples Sabots, Lasers, and Collegiate Flying Juniors. In addition, there are Stand Up Paddleboard races for men, women and youth. For those interested in pure fun without the work of the SUP or racing, we have a Dinghy Poker Run within the harbor. And if that weren’t enough, we take about 50 Marines from Camp Pendleton on a twilight fishing excursion, compliments of Dana Wharf Sportfishing, Anheuser-Busch, Stuft Pizza, and home baked cookies from the kitchens of two club members.

Sponsors are recognized at a cocktail reception on Friday night, September 5, and there is an event- wide dinner, auction and dancing on Saturday night at the yacht club. Saturday morning there is a Pancake Breakfast, beginning at 8:00. Following the weekend of racing and frivolity, there is a hosted Awards Luncheon on Sunday afternoon. Harbor and area restaurants donate food and beverages for all of these events, and for that we are so grateful! Because of their generous support and the support of our generous sponsoring members, we are able to send many more classes of students from Title One Schools on field trips to the Ocean Institute.

All the proceeds are earmarked for Adopt A Classes at the Ocean Institute.

COASTAL CLEAN UP DAY

UNDERWATER & ON THE WATER CLEANUPS AND CIGARETTE BUTT ROUNDUP EVENT – Sept. 20

OC Dana Point Harbor is preparing for the 30th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day with an underwater cleanup in the morning, along with the annual cigarette butt roundup and new this year, to complement the underwater and landside cleanup, there will be an on-the-water cleanup program administered from kayaks and dinghies. Nearly 40% of all debris items collected on Coastal Clean Up Day in 2013 were cigarette butts – volunteers picked up over 217,000 of them in less than three hours. It was the 25th straight year in which cigarette butts were the most littered item in California; this is most likely because many smokers mistakenly believe they are biodegradable, but are composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic and contain over 165 chemicals.

Each event will be serving refreshments and have some great prizes and opportunity drawings. OC Dana Point Harbor is seeking certified volunteer scuba divers to participate in the underwater clean up event. Participants will receive an event t-shirt as well as prizes awarded for unusual items recovered. Aqualung America, Inc., will be awarding a SCUBA regulator valued at $650 to the most unusual item recovered. For more information please go to www.ocdph.com.
